Movie Review: Quantum of Solace

I’ll admit right off the bat that I have a love/hate relationship with most Bond films. I really like a few of them, don’t care for others, and most of it comes down to the fact of whether or not the film is remotely believable. The first Daniel Craig James Bond film scored high in my book because of the believability. And then there is this one….

The Bad

I must be getting really old, because once again I used the subtitles. I like to think I’m not that old (30), but I just don’t know anymore. Really.

And there was one fight scene at the start that I gave up on trying to figure out who was who and just assumed that Bond would be the last one standing. It seemed to me that the camera was inserted in the fighter’s fists at times because it was moving so fast and jerky that there was just no way to actually see what was going on. I personally don’t care for that film style. Give me some breathing room from the action so I can interpret it.

The plot was also somewhat off in my opinion. I know it was a continuation of the other film (I can’t think of the name for some reason), but it didn’t seem connected to me. I spent much of the time trying to figure out how things were related and, perhaps most bothersome, how Bond was arriving at these conclusions. It seemed there was really a behind-the-scenes film that I should have watched that showed him figuring things out instead of just showing up at the right place.

The film also didn’t really seem to have real closure to me. Dropping the necklace in the snow would have, honestly, been lost on me if the subtitles hadn’t said something to the effect of [necklace falls in snow]. Really. Maybe I’m just that ignorant of a movie watcher, but….

The Good

I really like Daniel Craig as Bond. He brings an energy and realism that seems to be lacking from many of the other films. Maybe grit is the best word.

Beyond Daniel Craig, it was pretty average and pretty plain.

My Rating

Well, I’m sure Bond fans will soundly disagree with me on this one, but I didn’t really care for it. I saw it once and that was enough. I might watch it again some day if Courtney talks me into it, but other than that… No.

1.5 out of 4 stars.
