Happy Fourth everyone!!
I once saw an informal poll, and the Fourth came back as many people’s least favorite holiday. I don’t get that. Outside of Christmas, my top favorite holidays are the Fourth, Easter, and Thanksgiving. Probably in that order or at least close enough that an order doesn’t really matter.
I’ve always had a very emotional respect for my nation, and I have a hard time not getting emotional when I see soldiers or the flag in a formal setting. It’s hard for me to look at those things and not see the glory of what they stand for. Maybe more accurately, it’s hard for me not to see what has come before me and the obligations I have to live up to.
During the parade today, they had the Color Guard in front, and it was beautiful to see the crowd go silent and stand. I taught Katherine to put her hand over her heart and what that meant. She’s four, but I think she still got that something truly special was happening, something truly meaningful. After they passed, I took her in my arms and explained that those are heroes. She knows what heroes are of course: Mr. Incredible, Spider Man, Batman, and so on. But these are real heroes. Men and women who do those little things that make my life possible.
You have my deepest honor and respect.
I 100 percent agree with the heroes of our military! Anyone who can do that for our country is head and shoulders above any sports hero, superhero, vampire, or movie star.
Unfortunately for me, the 4th is not anything special for me this year. I am working all day and then as soon as I leave the building, I get ina car and drive to Hurricane to visit my family for a day, so I don’t get to see the parades and such.
But, next week, I do get to go to the Ute Stampede for all 3 evenings. And, each night, they include about a 15 minute tribute to the military and those serving, and who have served, and I always look forward to that. That is where I will get my boost of patriotism and my chance to show respect for them this year.
I always get choked up when the veterans roll past. And those currently in our armed forces. Despite the fact that I’m a “liberal wuss” I have to say I realize that we need troops, that we need brave men to fight for our country and that this job and position is one that should be respected above every other position. Above the president, the congress, the senate, etc. They’re the ones out physically sacrificing and fighting to keep us free and to keep our military interests abroad, and I think that we Americans have sidelined them lately in importance.
Happy fourth! Hope you guys weren’t too exhausted today.
That pamphlet we got about getting rid of the Fed and the man passing it out is for some reason still stuck in my head.
I’m with you, Dave. I love America and still get choked up when I hear patriotic hymns. We sang two in church yesterday, and I could hardly sing for the knot in my chest.
